ASSA ABLOY Issues Health Product Declaration for Wood Doors

ASSA ABLOY has issued the first Health Product Declaration (HPD) for wood doors manufactured by Graham and Maiman. This declaration is an open standard that was developed as a transparent way for manufacturers to disclose contents and ingredients in their products to customers, suppliers, certifiers and building standards organizations, making for a healthier built environment.

Graham and Maiman began collaboration with the HPD documentation process due in part to requests from major architectural firms such as HKS, Cannon Design and Perkins+Will. As pilot manufacturers for the HPD initiative, the Maiman Thermal Fused wood door and the Graham Earth Door team members supplied comprehensive materials ingredient data surrounding manufacturing, engineering and supply chain—very much beyond a typical bill of materials.

While ASSA ABLOY is joined by many notable corporations in this pilot project, such as BASF and CertainTeed, the HPD is the very first for commercial wood door manufacturers. Many manufacturers in the commercial building industry have yet to embark on the HPD journey. Aaron Smith, director of sustainable building solutions for ASSA ABLOY Door Security Solutions, confirms that the demand for sustainable buildings will grow substantially: “The marketplace will expect details regarding where a product is made, how it is made, and what it is made of. This product information is going to become paramount in the future.”

With the upcoming 2014 release of the United States Green Building Council LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Version 4, and more than 54,000 projects currently participating in LEED (Source:USGBC, 2013), the demand for transparency in building materials will continue to rise. Fortunately, Graham and Maiman, along with other ASSA ABLOY Group brands, are meeting these materials transparency needs today.
