CertainTeed Corp. has reached an important milestone in its quality management efforts, achieving globally recognized International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 9001 certification at its Norwood, Mass., roofing plant.
ISO 9001 standards were created to help companies establish requirements to maintain and manage processes influencing quality. To secure the globally recognized certification, CertainTeed developed a formalized quality management system that underwent rigorous review by third party auditor UL DQS, Inc.
“For more than 100 years, CertainTeed has made manufacturing quality roofing products a priority. It is deeply rooted in our company culture and operations,” says Patrick Widman, plant manager at CertainTeed’s Norwood roofing plant. “Achieving ISO 9001 certification is a culmination of hard work and dedication of our plant employees and their countless hours spent striving for excellence.”
To secure ISO 9001, the Norwood plant successfully demonstrated the ability to consistently manufacture roofing products that meet customer demand and applicable statutory and regulatory requirements. In addition, the facility pledges to constantly find ways to enhance customer satisfaction through the effective application of the quality management system, including processes for continual improvement and assurance of conformity to requirements.
The Norwood plant and its 85 employees manufacture a wide array of CertainTeed roofing products, including Landmark, Landmark Premium, XT 25, XT 30 and Shadow Ridge shingles.
This is the Norwood plant’s second ISO certification. In 2011, the plant received ISO 14001, created to help companies minimize their environmental impact and achieve continual improvement of environmental performance. At the Norwood roofing plant, a “green team” focuses on recycling and reducing waste. In addition, the plant has been recognized by its parent company, Saint-Gobain, with an Excellence in Energy Efficiency award for reducing energy use at the plant each year.
CertainTeed is home to 12 roofing facilities throughout the U.S. that are fully engaged in quality control while reducing the company’s environmental footprint. Collectively, the plants divert more than 250,000 tons of waste a year from landfills. In addition to asphalt shingles, CertainTeed offers innovative products that significantly boost the energy efficiency of a home, including Landmark Solaris™ solar reflective shingles and the Apollo photovoltaic roofing system.
