American design company, Wolf-Gordon, introduces the Gaufrage Collection, a series of embossed upholstery textiles composed of 100 percent mohair. Produced by Vescom, the collection is named after the historic gaufrage (“to emboss”) technique and showcases three classic patterns from Vescom’s sister mill, Schellens, located in the Netherlands.
Dating back to the 18th century, the great French decoration tradition of gaufrage reached its height of popularity during the 1920s and 1930s. Schellens decided to revive this beautiful and authentic technique after receiving overwhelmingly positive response to their embossed mohair samples from designers around the world in 2009.
Wolf-Gordon is reintroducing three of Schellens’ vintage patterns—Corfu, Lido and Paros—as classic designs with modern accents. Each of the three patterns in the collection are available in seven colorways based in warm gold, silver and copper hues.
- Corfu: design with a capricious lengthwise stripe.
- Lido: a Roman Classic, floral design.
- Paros: a small, all-over, geometric motif.
The production is fully carried out by Vescom at its own weaving mill, using the gaufrage technique of embossing a pattern into textiles with a cylindrical roller. The Gaufrage Collection possesses the characteristic pattern depth and rich, soft and glossy look that made traditional gaufrage extremely popular in the early 20th century.
Updated for modern purposes, the collection is composed with Wolf-Gordon’s Zanzibar mohair, which can stand 80,000 double rubs, making these textiles suitable for contract and hospitality environments.
