The 18th Annual SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500 Regional Series is set to kick off July 19, in Calgary, Alberta, and will run through Nov. 14, ending in Gold Hill, N.C. Dubbed the Super Bowl of Masonry, twenty-four cities across North America will play host to the best masons in their area. The stakes are high as only one mason and tender team per region will qualify for a chance to compete for the title, World’s Best Bricklayer, in Las Vegas, at the World Championship on Feb. 5, 2020, during the World of Concrete expo.
The competition is designed to test the speed, skill, and stamina of each participant by challenging them to build the best 26-foot-long brick wall in one hour with precision craftsmanship. The winning team advancing to Las Vegas is determined by a judging panel that detract brick from the total number of bricks laid based on workmanship infractions. The mason with the highest brick count at the end of judging qualifies for a spot on the 2020 World Championship roster.
World Championship prizes include a new Ford F-250 4×4 truck, John Deere Gator Crossover Utility Vehicle, Multiquip Mortar Mixer, and several other prizes, totaling over $125,000.
To support its workforce development drive, new this year at select regional events, SPEC MIX will host Jr. BRICKLAYER 500 competitions and Masonry Education Day expos which target high school and apprenticeship students. National and local sponsors will have an opportunity to interact with attendees and answer any questions about their products and how they work in real world applications. Students chosen to compete in the Jr. Competition will be given 20 minutes to build an abbreviated version of the wall being constructed during the day’s journeymen bricklaying battle.
The SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500 was established by SPEC MIX in 2003 to showcase the skill and craftsmanship of professional masons. It is featured as the headliner event of MASONRY MADNESS Day during the World of Concrete and recognized as the masonry industry’s premier bricklaying competition with a total purse estimated at $125,000 that annually awards the title, World’s Best Bricklayer. The Championship finale draws as many as 6,000 spectators with thousands of live webcast viewers across the world who tune in to watch this bricklayer battle.
