Materials
The lower level of the McClain Center provides a cohesive space for football operations and sports medicine. Because of the intensity of the football program, durable finishes were a high priority. Berners-Schober provided space flexibility by using an operable partition system with custom vinyl graphics. The vinyl graphics were consistent with interiors throughout the facility. The movable walls provide an easy separation between the locker room and pantry area.

The Retrofit
The McClain Center at the University of Wisconsin not only serves the current football team and staff, prospective student athletes will also be frequent visitors to the facility as a part of the ongoing recruiting effort of the university. To support and enhance the recruiting program, the public and circulation areas have high-quality finishes and materials centered around environmental graphics illustrating the rich history and success of UW athletics.
The three-phase renovation project included creating an athletics “hub” with a strength and conditioning space, performance lab, academic support, locker rooms and nutrition center. The project encompassed nearly 60,000 square feet of space throughout three years, upgrading facilities that were 20 to 70 years old.
