Futurecare is a rehabilitation and skilled nursing center in Maryland that has been in operation since 1986. Administrators wanted to prove their commitment of offering localized, personalized care with the renovations to their Cherrywood and Lochearn facilities, two facilities within the 14 functioning care centers. The Cherrywood facility received renovations to its main lobby, including a nursing station, and the dining room, while the Lochearn facility was rejuvenated through changes to its third-floor resident rooms.

Design Goals

The architects and facility managers strove to create a space that felt more home-like instead of institutional, according to executive assistant, Robin Stevenson. “Administrators at Futurecare sought out products that were not only durable, but also had a hotel-type feel for our residents, as it’s not supposed to feel like a hospital,” says Stevenson. The CS products were necessary in this renovation because of the foot, wheelchair and cart traffic that comes through the facilities every day along with the constant nuisance of wall painting. The design of our Acrovyn products was beneficial to the rehabilitation centers as well to brighten the areas and residents’ spirits.

Acrovyn handrails and crash rails were utilized in the main lobby and dining room of the Cherrywood facility, both of which residents and visitors pass through to get to the first-floor unit. Our Saratoga wall protection system was used to enclose and refresh the nurses’ station in the main lobby.

Lochearn’s third floor was modernized with Saratoga wall protection throughout the hallways and in resident rooms with flat panel Acrovyn Doors. Acrovyn by Design was used behind beds to create a space of comfort and relaxation with a design from its new pattern collection.

Stevenson was impressed with the “performance, design and versatility” demonstrated by our products during and after the renovation at the Cherrywood and Lochearn centers.

“We get a lot of compliments, especially compared to how many we received before,” says Stevenson regarding the renovation and the Acrovyn wall and door protection products.

Facility managers were pleased with how well Acrovyn by Design fit their needs in Lochearn. “Acrovyn by Design has changed the way we’ve been doing our resident rooms throughout the facility; instead of placing a bumper guard behind the bed, we’ve done a full-height piece of Acrovyn by Design. It’s great because it looks like wallpaper and slides up for maintenance. Before, the beds would pop off any chair rail we placed behind it. Acrovyn by Design gives the resident rooms a great feeling,” says Stevenson.

The lines of the Saratoga wall protection system combined with the protection of Acrovyn handrails and crash rails create an inviting look to all who enter either center. Acrovyn by Design was utilized to make pleasing interiors for residents while also providing protection within their rooms. The CS products chosen for the renovation provide durability and a completed design for these two Futurecare facilities.
