THE RETROFIT

The Shore Hotel comprises two buildings: a worn Travelodge and the faded Pacific Sands Motel. The buildings are owned by a family business led by Jon Farzam. Farzam says the Shore Hotel was seven years in the making, requiring feasibility studies, city planning and city council approval, before breaking ground in January 2010. The project was completed in February 2011.

Every decision regarding Shore Hotel was made with the environment in mind. The contextual design uses the natural landscape and includes gardens to enhance the ambiance and keep the beach feeling close. LED lighting illuminates the space, and sandstone walls further reflect the beach environment.

The two hotel areas are separated by a narrow street, and their entrances are opposite one another to ease flow from one building to the other. A skywalk also connects the two buildings. The stainless steel on the building’s exterior looks different at different times of day and under different weather conditions, resulting in changes as dramatic as the weather.
