Sto Corp was recently singled out as a member of the building industry team awarded AWCI’s Excellence in Construction Quality Award, winning the top honor in the category of Exteriors.
The project award was for The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, an attraction at Universal Studios Hollywood, which incorporated Sto Corp’s fluid applied air and moisture barrier, StoGuard. The StoGuard Gold Coat system was chosen to provide control over air and moisture to improve building performance and occupant comfort. “It was a massive undertaking,” said Gary Schenk of Foundation Building Materials (FBM), formerly Great Western, a distributor for Sto Corp products. “We were excited that KHS&S Contractors asked for our help on this assignment, and eventually StoGuard was used on more than 90% of the project.”
According to Schenk, KHS&S Contractors of Anaheim, California, the applicator on the job, called in FBM to help with details on the exterior specifications and to suggest products suitable for such an undertaking. Ultimately, the “Wizarding World” structures were clad in 265,000 square feet of StoGuard Gold Coat with Fabric, and incorporated Sto Finishes and Quikrete Pre Sanded FRS. The project took 18 months to complete, and the attraction opened in April of this year.
“We were gratified to be a part of this project and to receive this recognition from AWCI,” said Kevin MacKinnon, SVP of sales and marketing for Sto Corp. “Universal’s The Wizarding World of Harry Potter was a high-profile undertaking, and we are pleased that Sto’s system met the requirements set by the buildings’ designers.”
The building and construction team was honored at the Opening Session and Awards Brunch at AWCI’s Convention & INTEX Expo in New Orleans on April 18th.
