Lowe’s Hosts Build Out to Help Raise Awareness for Skilled Trades
Mooresville, N.C.-based Lowe’s Home Improvement believes the skilled trades are an essential part of America’s future and is committed to building the next generation of skilled workers. That’s why the retailer partnered with SkillsUSA, Leesburg, Va., in October 2019 to host a regional skilled trades community service event at the iconic Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena, Calif. The build out featured 300 high-school students from around Southern California in the first-ever Generation T Bunk Build.
Located in the stadium’s Court of Champions, the event showcased SkillsUSA students showing off their carpentry skills for a great cause—building 100 bunk beds that were donated to Sleep in Heavenly Peace, a non-profit organization dedicated to building, assembling and delivering beds to children and families in need. Generation T partners, including Timberland PRO, PeopleReady and Samsung, donated funds and volunteers to help with the event. Additionally, Serta and Tuft & Needle donated mattresses and bedding for the completed bunk beds.
More than 60 organizations led by Lowe’s launched the Generation T movement in April 2019 to help fill the skilled trades gap. The goal of Generation T is to shift the perception of the trades by demonstrating the economic mobility and career opportunities skilled trades provide, a change the organization believes starts with today’s high schoolers. The Rose Bowl event helped these decision-making youths see firsthand how achievable and meaningful skilled trades can be.
