Emerson Network Power’s ASCO Series 336 Paralleling System

Emerson Network Power, a business of Emerson that maximizes availability, capacity and efficiency of critical infrastructure, debuts the ASCO Series 336 Paralleling System—the industry’s first paralleling switchgear based on a transfer switch.

The system combines robust, field-proven paralleling switchgear components, a, dual-operator closed transition transfer switch mechanism and a new, sophisticated controller in a single, space-saving enclosure. Its footprint can be as small as 28 in deep by 38 in. wide.

The system is configured in a standardized, modular design that provides flexibility, quick delivery, cost savings and overall simplicity. It satisfies power reliability requirements of small office buildings, oil and gas plants and drilling sites, healthcare facilities and grid support programs. The system is listed and labeled to UL891.

The sophisticated controller with custom programming and ASCO’s time-proven algorithms provide one-of-a-kind load management functionality. Up to four levels of load control maximizes protection for priority one loads by first shedding load levels four, three and two in order. A unique operating method adds loads based on actual kW, rather than the number of gen-sets, regardless of how many gen-sets are operating.

Other system management tools include generator management, start next generator on alarm and run-time management. Generator management automatically starts and stops gen-sets to maintain a pre-set spinning reserve or safety margin, reducing gen-set maintenance and fuel consumption. The start next generator on alarm function automatically starts and adds a gen-set to the bus if an operating gen-set experiences operational issues, such as overheating. The run-time management function automatically starts and stops gen-sets so their hours of operation remain fairly equal or it intentionally offsets hours to stagger routine maintenance.

Rather than daisy-chaining gen-set power connections together, the ASCO Series 336 Paralleling System uses the time-proven hub and spoke design, providing additional security in case of failure. The hub and spoke design circumvents single-failure vulnerability and helps ensure high reliability. If a gen-set fails, the control system can start the next generator, switch power system to isolate the failure, and return power to high priority loads, effectively making a self-healing system.

The modular design simplifies expanding a two-gen-set system to a four-unit, or larger, configuration. It’s ideal for compact power generation configurations and minimizes job-specific engineering. UL891 distribution circuit breakers can be added easily with a standard bus interface.

A simple, intuitive control interface allows the entire system to be started with a single contact or switch. Easy-to-operate, fault-tolerant controls, along with ANSI protective functions, ensure the closed transition transfer switch will maximize power system protection with the added back-up of the generator circuit breaker for over-current faults.
