Throughout its history, PDM has grown and consistently been at the forefront of dramatic changes that have characterized the profession of dentistry while remaining faithful to its original mission: \u201cto prepare students for qualification for dental practice, to provide graduate training for qualified practitioners, and to create the opportunity and facilities for scientific research in dentistry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Following years of limited scope updates, university leadership committed to a holistic three-phase renovation that began in the fall of 2015. The renovation would not only improve program offerings for PDM, it would also create a 3,200-square-foot, 2-story addition whose massing and fa\u00e7ade solutions would unify the architectural heritage of the three PDM campus buildings, which consist of the historic Evans building; Robert I. Schattner Center, built in 2002; and Leon Levy Center for Oral Health Research, built in the 1970s. The architecture of the addition also frames Fonseca Gardens, which were created in 2004 to help unify the PDM campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

COMBINING OLD AND NEW<\/h4>\n\n\n\n
UPenn and PDM charged EwingCole\u2019s integrated A\/E design team with enhancing student and faculty engagement, improving patient experience, creating space for student social interaction, as well as establishing a symbolic and physical connection between clinical and research spaces with an addition, known as the Schattner Pavilion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Working within the confines of existing campus infrastructure is always a challenge. This project was particularly difficult in that construction efforts were required in three of the school\u2019s existing buildings. The employed strategy took the 10,000-square-foot Main Clinic within the Evans building completely offline (in lieu of multiple phases) and then constructed the Schattner Pavilion and connected it to the Levy center as a second phase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Taking PDM\u2019s largest clinic space offline for any amount of time was undesirable; however, this approach was deemed the most cost-effective and least disruptive approach to school operations. To accommodate the phasing requirements, the school adjusted class schedules, modified its operations schedule and employed a swing clinic. The contractor also had crews working three shifts to expedite the first phase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new, 2-story Schattner Pavilion addition strategically locates a student lounge at Level 1, and a 60-seat patient waiting area at Level 2 improves wayfinding within the complex while encouraging the desired interaction between students, faculty and researchers. Extending the addition beyond the west face of the Robert I. Schattner Center\u2019s existing atrium allows connection to the existing Evans building, including the renovated Main Clinic at the second level of the facility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To the north at Level 2, the addition inserts itself into the \u201970s era Brutalist Levy building and replaces exterior masonry with glazing. A new communicating stair overcomes the 5-foot floor-to-floor differential between the existing Schattner center and Levy building. By enclosing an exterior arcade of the Levy building at Level 1, the project impact is extended. Connections between the new program spaces and the existing facility are magnified. The long, thin addition provides a gracious entry to the Levy research building, an intimate gathering area with views across Fonseca Gardens to the historic Evans building and direct views into working research labs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The renovation at Level 2 within the historic Evans building focuses on the teaching clinic and the creation of a welcoming, soothing experience for patients. The clinic volume now is anchored by the centrally located Schattner Pavilion addition, which creates an arrival point for patients and hub of operations for students, faculty and staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Main Clinic design creates an environment for 74 individual operatories optimized for teaching techniques via \u201cfour-handed dentistry\u201d. The individual operatories are a modularized system developed by the team to allow open sightlines for faculty supervision while maintaining patient privacy and reducing noise levels. In addition, minimizing movement between activities and steps between destinations allows students and faculty more time to focus on clinical instruction and patient care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The program also provides ancillary support spaces, including a CAD\/CAM center, wet laboratories, faculty meeting areas, streamlined instrument management, and centrally located clinical workstations to enhance educational opportunities for students and pedagogical occasions for faculty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
PHOTOS:<\/strong> HALKIN\/MASON PHOTOGRAPHY LLC unless otherwise noted<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n Like many buildings on the UPenn campus, the Evans building is not on the National Register of Historic Places but holds significance in the university\u2019s history, specifically for PDM. In honor of the character of the original Evans building, the clinic\u2019s new ceiling shape and contemporary chandeliers were informed by historic photos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Understanding of natural and artificial lighting was critical in the success of this project. Within the clinic, the team developed a strategy to reintroduce large north-facing windows that had been blocked by previous renovations. Via a forensic approach to learning about the history of the Evans building, the team was able to deliver new high-performance curtainwall windows that are representative in scale, proportion and aesthetic quality to the original windows. To ensure consistency of lighting, the team employed lighting analysis software to model artificial lighting scenarios and achieve the school\u2019s standard of 90 foot-candles (to ease eye fatigue of students and faculty) and 5000 Kelvin (for color matching).<\/p>\n\n\n\n Meanwhile, the Schattner Pavilion addition proved to be an interesting lighting challenge. The primary fa\u00e7ade is west facing, and the 2-story addition is directly in front of the Schattner center\u2019s light-filled entry atrium. The team again employed analysis software to study the effects of the overall building massing to maintain direct light into the Schattner center\u2019s entry lobby. The team employed shading elements, like fa\u00e7ade fins and canopies, to mitigate uncomfortable light and heat, as well as selected glazing and frit patterns to ensure a comfortable, glare-free and light-filled place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Similar to other learning environments, the teaching clinic needed to strike a balance between aural privacy and comfort with the need for faculty observation. By employing a combination of industry-standard approaches and customized solutions, the clinic consists of acoustic ceiling tiles to absorb high-frequency sounds and 1,300 square feet of absorptive wall panels installed on the south side of the clinic to offset the hard surfaces of the large windows across the entire north wall. The operatory wall design played a critical role in the solution, as well. The partial-height walls were carefully studied to determine height and length to ensure conversations in each operatory would remain private while allowing faculty to observe students and ease circulation in and through the individual operatories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The team coordinated directly with UPenn dental operations and maintenance staff to ensure material selections were in keeping with the university\u2019s Facilities and Real Estate Services standards and would be appropriate for the school\u2019s maintenance procedures. Flooring selections and waste-management procedures were of concern. Additionally, the teaching clinic is a highly trafficked space designed to withstand the abuse of students and the public. The modular wall surfaces, which include a subtle matte sheen to reduce surface reflection as part of the calming environment, are constructed of materials resistant to scratching, staining, chipping and peeling. Should damage occur, the surfaces can be repaired onsite quickly to ensure minimal operatory-room downtime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Comprehensive clinical experience, diverse patient base and wide exposure to cases is essential to success of any student participating in the UPenn dental program. All students and a large segment of Philadelphia\u2019s underserved population use the renovated Main Clinic dedicated to general restorative dentistry. Supporting student and patient experiences, the Schattner Pavilion addition separates student space from the entry atrium. The addition\u2019s patient waiting area is within view of the Main Clinic entry and has sightlines directly to the outdoors and the clinic, easing patients\u2019 angst about knowing where to go in an unfamiliar place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n PDM is a top-tier medical institution. EwingCole was entrusted to preserve the legacy of PDM and provide its students and patients with a facility to carry that legacy into the future.
