After winning the 2002 Daytona 500, racing legend Ward Burton turned his attention to something else near-and-dear to his heart—the Ward Burton Wildlife Foundation. In addition to the foundation’s conservation work, it operates an outreach facility in Blackstone, Va., that hosts Veteran groups who come to the rural location to hunt, fish and hike.
Because the facility is not in use every week, Burton wanted to replace its standard gas tank water heater with a tankless unit that would provide hot water on demand rather than heating water continuously. With help from local contractor John Testerman of John Testerman Plumbing in nearby Sandston, Va., Burton chose a State ProLine XE Tankless Condensing Gas Water Heater with X3 Scale Prevention Technology.
“We decided to install a truly 21st century State tankless unit to make it more economical for us when the facility isn’t in use,” Burton says. “It was important to me that we chose a unit that wouldn’t require routine maintenance since I’m not at the facility every day. With State’s innovative X3 Technology, I no longer have to worry about scale-related maintenance.”
Ward is no stranger to working with State. The relationship dates back to 2007 when the company began sponsoring his team at Morgan McClure Motorsports. In recent years, State has also sponsored Ward’s son, Jeb Burton, and his NASCAR Xfinity Series racing career. The long-lasting partnership with State has continued thanks to a shared belief in the value of durability and dependability.
“It’s an absolute pleasure to work with a company that is excited to support our work with Veteran groups, including Project Healing Waters and others,” Burton notes. “Thanks to the new State X3 tankless gas water heater, our guests will instantly get hot water when they need it—in a way that helps save money, which is critical for non-profit operations.”
The advanced X3 technology allows mineral particles to pass through harmlessly while constantly protecting the heat exchanger from scale buildup. This eliminates the need for regular descaling maintenance and extends the unit’s life three times longer than models without X3 technology.
With X3 technology, customers avoid the hassle of filter changes and periodic system purges. “You get all the benefits of endless hot water without maintenance,” Testerman says. “Most tankless water heaters require maintenance at least once a year, but not this one. It can go 15 years without descaling maintenance. If you try that with a conventional tankless unit, you’re in trouble.”
